The Space Between Summer & Fall in Chinese Medicine

In Chinese Medicine we call this time of year “Late Summer” and marks the last few weeks before we move into the cooler temps of Fall. It’s the transition point from active Yang growth periods of spring and summer to the Yin introspective and restful time of fall and winter. Late Summer is associated with the earth element and symbolizes centering, nourishment and transformation. It’s a time to reflect and recenter as we process all the activity of summer and prepare for the slowing down of fall and winter.

Internally, the earth element is represented by the spleen and stomach, which govern digestion and are responsible for transforming food and nutrients into our body’s qi and blood, vital substances for all other internal functions.  Just as the Earth nourishes plants in nature, the Earth element in our bodies supports our overall health and our ability to nourish ourselves.

When it comes to our menstrual cycles, The Earth element acts as the transition or pivot between each phase of our cycle, particularly the transition from ovulation to our luteal or premenstrual phase. If our earth element is imbalanced our period can be affected, resulting in irregular cycles with our menses coming earlier, later, or become absent altogether. After ovulation earth also provides the crucial foundation for sustaining hormone levels and growing new life, and it is believed that conception occurs under the auspices of earth.

Here are a few simple tips you can incorporate at home to support your earth element during this time and throughout your cycle:

  • Keep your body moving with light exercises that emphasize balance and grounding, such as tai qi or yoga. Go for an easy after meal walk to help stimulate the spleen and stomach.

  • Keep meals simple and relaxed. Focus on chewing your food more, eating well cooked meals with few ingredients that are simple to digest. Make time to sit and eat and avoid screens while eating.

  • Yellow and orange foods like squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots are particularly beneficial, as they resonate with the Earth element's energy. It is also a good time to moderate dietary habits, avoiding excessive cold or foods that can tax the digestive system.

  • Nourish yourself physically and emotionally and prioritize your well being at this time. It’s a great time to set boundaries and focus on centering activities that help us digest our emotions, like meditation or deep breathing.

  • With the hot days of late summer and the shift from Yang activity to Yin, think about starting to slow down, and make sure you are staying hydrated and getting enough sleep.

  • If you’re feeling fatigued or bogged down either physically or emotionally it’s a good time to come in for acupuncture to further strengthen your spleen and stomach function.
